Introducing: Mixing 101

Hey, guys. Matthew Weiss here, and I’d like to tell you about Mixing 101.

Mixing 101 is an introductory tutorial that’s going to give you the foundation for how to mix a record. The basic idea is if you’ve been mixing for only a couple years or less, this is going to help you get up to speed and give you what you need to develop further.

So if you’re a musician who’s maybe just starting out mixing your own recordings, if you’re about to get an internship or start off down an educational path that’s dedicated to engineering, or maybe you’ve been producing records for a little while longer, but you haven’t had any form of formal training.

This tutorial is going to help you out.

So some of the things that we are going to be talking about are signal flow, gain staging, session setup and organization, source prep, phase, polarity, and then some basic mixing concepts that you’re going to run into again and again and again, like the basics of signal processors, and how to use those signal processors like compressors, EQs, reverbs, delays, on things like drums, bass, vocals, and basically to put it all together and really get at the heart of what it is to mix a record.

The website is That’s

It’s one of my longer tutorials, but it’s very detailed. I really want to give you guys the foundation that you need to develop as engineers, and to make your music really shine.

So I hope you check it out, and I hope you learn a lot. Until next time.
