Waves IR-Live Convolution Reverb: First Impressions + Audio Examples

Hey, what’s up guys? I’ve got a quick product — not really a review, we’re just going to check it out. I think it sounds cool.

But new plug-in from Waves. Their IR-Live Convolution Reverb that was released at NAMM. This thing is super simple, it couldn’t be any easier to use. You’ve got four knobs down here, pre-delay, reverb time, a mix knob, just so you can go from dry to wet, and output.

Above that, over here on the right, you’ve got some shelving options as far as ducking lows and highs and whatnot. It comes with a bunch of different presets. Halls, chambers, rooms, plates, even some spring reverbs. Pretty cool.

I’ve got it pulled up on a session here.

Now this thing is sort of — the engine of it is sort of where the magic is. It doesn’t really take up a ton of your CPU so you can use it a lot. It’s sole intention I think is for live mixing, but you could totally use this thing on mixing in the box as well, so don’t let that fool you.

This is a track that’s an acoustic demo. Kind of a YouTube thing. I’ve got it pulled up with a room setting. Let’s play that for you and you can check it out.

So that’s with it on. Here’s with it muted. Same chunk.

[acoustic guitar with and without room reverb]

Reverb on. Off.

Anyways, that’s the room. Let’s isolate the vocal here.

That’s the live room. Let’s check out a chamber. Chamber 2.

Then a bigger space. Let’s check out a short plate. Short plate 2.

Thing sounds great. Check out Live Hall. Live Hall 3.

Just the acoustic.

With the reverb.

But anyways, as you can see, I don’t have a ton of plug-ins, I’ve got a 550a on some tracks, I’ve got an SSL buss comp going… I’m trying out this iZotope Nectar thing. I’ve never used it before, it’s kind of one of those all in one preset things from iZotope. The delay and all of that stuff is turned off, it’s just EQ and compression, but this thing is kind of a tank. If I bypassed this, watch my CPU.

Boom. Back down to eight. So if you aren’t using this big thing and you just had this IR-Live, let’s see what happens to my CPU here. Bypass. It doesn’t budge.

Anyways, this was short. I hope you guys enjoy it. I’m not a huge fan of Waves reverb plug-ins, but I really liked this. I’ve tried so hard to get into R-Verb and I can’t remember the name of the other reverb they put out. I just couldn’t — I don’t know, I couldn’t get into it. I always had to go elsewhere.

This, I really liked. It sounds great. So check it out for yourself and we’ll see you next time.
