Introducing: Mixing EDM
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some great EDM producers, such as Lady Gaga’s former producer, Space Cowboy, Nadia O, Banana Dynamite, DJ Kid Icky, The Dance, and many more.
EDM is a genre of music that relies heavily on the mix, both in terms of the production, and using mix based effects, as well as how the overall sound impacts the listener in that big room.
When we want to hear that record, we want to hear it big.
So, the tutorial is divided into two major segments. The first is going to be a point for point walkthrough, from the very beginning of a completely unmixed record, to the end. That will be followed up with a mastering workshop, which features world renowned mastering engineer, Chris Athens.
The second part is going to be a Workshop segment that is dedicated to four very specific concepts that I feel, if you can get under your belt, you’re going to nail every EDM mix. Those concepts are contrast, transitions, stereo wideness, and an in-depth look at kick drums.
Because let’s face it, if we can’t get the kick drum right, the whole mix isn’t going to work.
I’ve also included the multi-tracks to the record that I used in the walkthrough, so that you can download them, pull them into your own DAW, and mix along. I feel that giving you the stems and seeing what I do with them will allow you to get the tacit hands on experience you need to really get these ideas and concepts under your belt.
The key to this tutorial is not so much what I choose to do, but how I explain why I choose to do it. If you can internalize the why, if you can internalize the concepts and the ideas, then when you approach any other record, you can take that same ideology of process, and apply it the way you want to apply it, and make your own mix really shine.
So, check out www.mixingedm.com, give it a download, and get ready to learn a whole lot.
