Pro Tip #1 – Automating the Mix Bus

Transcript
Hey guys, what’s up? Welcome to a new video.

I’ve got a quick Pro Tip for you this week. Really simple automation move that’s going to make your choruses sound bigger, and I’ve got a track. It sounds like this.

[mix]

Right. Pop/Dance thing.

Basically what you’re going to do, I have a chorus here, and all I’ve done on my mix buss is I’ve automated the chorus up half a dB. I’ve done that on first chorus, second chorus, as well as the outro here.

It’s subtle, but it makes a pretty big impact. So let’s A/B it real quick. Here’s with the automation move as it is now.

[mix]

Right. Feels like a chorus.

Now let’s clear this section and listen to it without.

[mix]

As opposed to this.

[mix]

Right. Here’s cleared one more time.

[mix]

Right. With the automation move…

[mix]

Just really helps you feel like you’ve arrived at a chorus. A lot of guys do this. Again, these are tiny, tiny moves. Nothing drastic. Half a dB up in all of your choruses, or sort of the big part of any song. If you just wanted to get that final little push at the end, just a quick, small thing you can do to help you get there.

I hope you take something from this. Try it out in your own mixes, and I will see you in the next video. Thanks.
