Waves Element Synth: Presets / First Impressions

Hey guys, I’ve got another video.

Today, let’s check out this new Elements synth from Waves. It was released this week. A couple days ago, or last week, or I don’t know. It’s pretty new.

I thought we’d go through some presets, check it out. I’m not a huge electronic dance guy, but you know, I do a lot of Pop music and I’m always looking for new lead lines, new pads, new sequencers and bass sounds and all that.

I’d be interested to see what you guys think about it. Anybody where a plug-in like this or software synths are really sort of your workhorse. Let me know what you think if you like this or not.

Again, I’m going to just go through some presets.

So far, I’ve been pretty impressed with the sound quality. Pretty analog-y. A lot of these things can sound really thin, really weak, and just kind of cheesy sounding. Kind of just not really mess with them.

Personally, I’m a big Native Instruments guy, so I use Kontakt and Massive is kind of my go-to synth for stuff like this, but this is a new one, and so far, I’m pretty impressed with it. Let’s just pick something random. 90s Trance.

[90s Trance synth]

So yeah. I mean, the thing is laid out pretty easily. You’ve got your two oscillators up here, and your attack, decay, sustain, release in your VCF, it’s got effects it comes with, some delays, some reverb, some chorus, you’ve got a little distortion here too, you can make it pre or post, which is nice.

You come down here you’ve got four LFOs and another VCA. A little EQ section which is cool, four band kind of graphic EQ looking thing with a high and low pass filter. We have this mod matrix thing, which I’m not real sure what it does. Envelope three.

Then we’ve got output controls so we can sync to host or do different tempos or whatever we need to do, and gain. Down here at the bottom is your sequencer, your step sequencer, your arpeggiator.

Anyways, let’s get into this stuff and let’s check out some sounds.

[Element synth, changing presets]

Pretty crazy stuff.

[Element synth]

Let’s see what they’ve got labeled here… Anything interesting? Um… We’ve got Try It.

[Element Synth]

That’s pretty cool. Kind of bassy.

What else… Oh, there’s one called Hasselhoff.

[Element Synth]

And it’s the Night Rider thing.

[Element Synth]

Now I want to make like, dubstep friggin’ Night Rider remix.

[Element Synth]

I know what I’m doing this weekend, guys.

Okay, that’s cool. So those are sequences, and there’s a ton of these things in here. Got gated, let’s check out some of that stuff. Talking pads.

[Element Synth, gated pads]

It’s cool. A lot of useful stuff.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Cool sounds.

[Element Synth]

Really full. I mean, there’s a lot of kind of 3D depth and width to these sounds. It doesn’t really sound cheap at all, which is cool.

[Element Synth]

Another cool one.

[Element Synth]

That’s a cool sound. What else we got.

Check out a couple more. 70’s Electro.

[Element Synth, 70’s Electro]

Alright. There’s gated. I don’t want to spend tons of time on this.

Arpeggiators, Punchy Arp.

[Element Synth, Punchy Arp]

That’s the oscillator too. You can go four octaves.

[Element Synth, higher pitch]

Change some stuff up there. What’s next.

[Element Synth]

Swung.

[Element Synth, Swing By]

[Element Synth, Flashbacks]

[Element Synth]

Pretty neat sounds. I’m liking this little all-in-one kind of plug-in here.

Let’s check out keys, what we’ve got. Mellow Keys.

[Element Synth, Mellow Keys]

I’m not a keyboard player, so don’t hold it against me. Soft Keys.

[Element Synth, Soft Keys]

What just happened now.

[Element Synth]

Let’s see what else we’ve got.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Punchy Mallets. Alright, let’s check out some pads. Well, let’s check out Harmonium. That’s cool.

[Element Synth, Harmonium]

Pretty neat sounds there. What else do we have, Marimba?

[Element Synth, Marimba]

Alright, let’s go to pads. What do we got. Moog Pad.

[Element Synth, Moog Pad]

I like that. Pretty useful.

[Element Synth]

Swell effects on that one.

[Element Synth]

See what’s next.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

[Element Synth, Woof]

Sounds like Woof.

[Element Synth]

Classic Analog, that’s cool.

[Element Synth, Classic Analog]

Kinda Moog-y sounding.

[Element Synth]

That’s a nice one.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Plastic Bass…

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Again, I’m just kind of going through some tones, you can demo this yourself and you could spend days going through everything.

SummerTime Bass.

[Element Synth, SummerTime Bass]

Alright. Done with bass sounds. Can check out some leads here, we’ll do a couple. Planet Ethnic.

[Element Synth, Planet Ethnic]

[Element Synth, Punchy drum]

Cool.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Clicky. That could be a cool one.

[Element Synth]

Some snare sounds.

[Element Synth]

Z-Snare?

[Element Synth, Z-SNR]

I like that.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

What else we have on here.

[Element Synth]

Got some loops.

[Element Synth, loops]

[Element Synth, Space Cello]

[Element Synth]

Some really twisted sounds.

[Element Synth]

[Element Synth, Operator]

Alright, Inharmonic. So let’s go to SFX. See what’s going on here. Digi Cat.

[Element Synth, Digi Cat]

Cool sound effect.

[Element Synth]

Good tool for sound designers maybe.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

That has cool Pac-Man.

[Element Synth]

Old school kind of arcade sounds.

[Element Synth]

I like that. I’ll definitely be using that in something.

[Element Synth]

This is some type of cool stuff for me.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Machine Gun.

[Element Synth]

That’s…

[Element Synth]

I don’t know what that is.

[Element Synth, adjusting presets]

Bad Reception…

[Element Synth]

Alright, we’re back to sequences now.

Okay, I’m not going to take up much more of your time than that.

Demo it out. Check it out for yourself. I thought I’d just do a video. It just came out, so you can hear some quick sounds. I hope I didn’t annoy you too much.

But yeah, these things, you know, these sequencers, I will say I get a lot of questions, like, “What do I buy? Do I buy Logic or do I get this Massive or Absynth or…?”

Because there’s a billion of these things out, and I definitely rank this one up there. I’ll be using it on projects.

I’m personally a Massive guy, I know it well, I know how to get around it, I know how to route within it, I know the libraries pretty well, and really, just get one man, and stick with it and just learn how to do everything on it. I swear. It’ll take you really far.

A lot of guys will just go buy tons of stuff and it’s just really overwhelming.

So anyways, that’s what I’ll say about virtual synths. This is a great all-in-one I think. I like the sound of it. Let me know what you think. You’re going to buy it, you’re going to demo it, check it out.

If you do any tunes with it, post it up as a response or comment on it and hit me with a SoundCloud link, I’d love to check it out.

Subscribe if you haven’t subscribed, hit me up on Twitter, we’ve got a new premium tutorial on mixing drums coming out next, hopefully this weekend if I can find time on Friday to finish editing.

Anyways, that’s all I’ve got. Really quick, kind of a silly video, but I hope this kind of clues you in on this plug-in. Again, great stuff from Waves. Looking forward. I hope they get into more of this virtual instrument kind of market. They were in it for a little while, and then they kind of went away, and now they’re back, so I’m excited, and we’ll see you next time.
