Recording a Song in 45 Mins with an iRig Keys I/O

Transcript
Warren: Hello everybody, hope you’re doing marvelously well. This is my very good friend, mister Steve Maggiora.

Steve: Hello.

Warren: And we have made, I don’t know, 175,000 records together? Maybe 176.

Steve is an amazing keyboard player. He’s also a singer and a songwriter, which you’re also rather good at.

So we have a challenge in the next 45 minutes. It was an hour when we first started talking about it. The next 45 minutes, he’s going to write and record a song on what they put in this box.

Now, it is a keyboard with a mic pre in it, tons of software, loads of shenanigans, I don’t know. We’re going to plug it in and see what happens.

Steve: It’s going to be great.

Warren: Let’s get going.

And the best thing is, you can enter to win this!

Steve: This thing is sweet man. Downloaded a bunch of free plugins that came with it, which was incredible. Amplitube, the Miroslav Philharmonic sample tank, Syntronik Free, Syntronik Pro-V, T-Racks… All this stuff comes with the purchase of the controller, which is awesome.

[recording MIDI drums]

We’re using the — all the Sample Tank instruments here from IK Multimedia.

[bass]

Keyboard electric guitar.

Here’s the pre-chorus.

[keyboard electric guitar]

Cool thing about this iRig keys I/O, it does have a Neutrik input jack on the back, and phantom power, and a gain knob.

[vocals]

Add some background vocals.

Warren: Steve, thank you ever so much.

Steve: Absolutely, thanks for having me.

Warren: So that seems quite insane that it’s — I don’t know how much it is — $129 or whatever?

Steve: Something like that, yeah.

Warren: It’s got a mic pre in it?

Steve: It’s got a mic pre in it, it’s got phantom power in it, it’s got balanced outputs, and it connects USB to your laptop or desktop computer, or you can also plug it into your iOS device, your iPhone, iPad, and record on there.

Warren: It comes with this nifty widget that sits in it. Duh, duh, duh!

So that’s pretty amazing. And all of that software was free with it?

Steve: Yes, that was all included.

Warren: And when I went on their website, it said the software would be about $500 to buy.

Steve: That’s incredible, man.

Warren: That seems like a good deal. Just buy the keyboard to get the $500 worth of software. But it’s good for you, because now you can record straight onto your cell phone. You don’t need your little 2i2 thing you have anymore, you have a mic pre in there.

Steve: A bunch less extra cables to bring around, and it’s great. Win win.

Warren: Speaking of winning, you can enter to win it. There’ll be a link somewhere around there. And Steve wants to say marvelous.

Steve: Marvelous.

Warren: [laughs] Hope you’re doing marvelously well. Please enter to win and have a marvelous time recording and mixing.
