Native Instruments RC-24 Reverb Classics! First Impressions

What’s up, guys? Another video, another plug-in review.

Native Instruments came out with some new reverbs. I thought I’d review them. This one’s the RC-24. They teamed up with a company called SofTube who — they’re a bunch of rockstar scientist ninja over there coming out with their own great plug-ins.

So anyways. SofTube and Native Instruments teamed up. They came out with these two great reverbs, RC-48 and the RC-24. This is the 24. I’m just going to throw it on some vocals, we’ll take a listen to it and see what it sounds like. It models the old hardware.

Breakdown of the plug-in, you’ve got three sort of algorithms here to pick from. Room, small hall and large hall. You’ve got options here as far as wet and mix goes.

Wet, if you’re going to stick it on a send like I’m doing now, just put it on wet and it’s 100% wet. If you want to use it as an insert, go to mix and you can dial in how much of this you want caked into your track. You can use it like that. I’ll leave it on wet.

You’ve got your visual metering here, your spectrum. Below that you have pre-delay, depth, and intensity settings. Then you have bass and mid and high cut.

The bass and mid aren’t really EQ things, they’re more of like reverb decay time really, based on mids and bass bands, and you have a crossover here, so you can sort of define where that happens. Then you of course have a hi-cut, so you can cut up to 10kHz or whatever you want to do.

Pre-delay, obviously we all know what pre-delay does. Depth, we’ll move some knobs around, you can hear that stuff. But let’s get into it.

I have it on a vocal track here.

[mix]

Let’s mute this acoustic guitar and just listen to the vocal.

[vocals]

Alright, so if we take the depth up…

[vocals]

Got a lot more sort of depth out of it.

Let’s hear what intensity does.

[vocals]

We’ll put some more excitement there. Pre-delay…

[vocals]

Obviously delaying that reverb when it kicks in.

[vocals]

And then let’s check out the bass and mids so you can hear what that does.

[vocals]

It goes on forever. Here’s — I cranked the mids up.

[vocals]

So you really get a lot of control over decay time. You know, divided up into frequency bands.

The hi-cut.

[vocals]

Anyways, let’s just check out some presets. This is Pop Vox.

[vocals]

Let’s check out Nice Vocal.

[vocals]

What else do we got. That’s all in Medium… Pop Vox, Thin Vocal.

[vocals]

What else do we have… What’s under Large, let’s just get kind of crazy with it. Dream Hall. This is going to sound crazy.

[vocals]

You’re going to want to dial that in subtly.

We just got a vocal room.

[vocals]

Um… What else do we have. Small… Vocal widener.

[vocals]

So it definitely gets wider. Let’s toss the acoustic back in.

[mix]

Sounds really warm. What’s under Classic… Let’s just check out one of these halls. We’ll go bright.

[mix]

Anyways. As you can see, this thing sounds great. Really warm sounding, which is sort of like, the vibe of the old box. Let’s check out the slapback.

[mix]

Verse.

[mix]

Anyways, that’s a vocal. So let’s take that send off. I’ll put this back on. Let’s go back up and let’s send some guitar over to it.

[mix]

Some slapback. I’ll see if they have any acoustic — wood room.

[mix]

Um… What else do we have in here. Large, grand piano hall.

Thing rings forever. What’s another medium… Acoustic guitar.

[mix]

Anyways, you get an idea. Demoing for yourself, go to their website, they give free demos. Pretty affordable. Go check them out. I think they sound great. Let me know what you think. What are you using?
